Resurgent Search: Looking for concerts, sports, and in-store shopping

Google Ads Research and Insights team conducted monthly research analyzing what users are searching on Google. The study is aimed to learn consumers’ behavior in order to better understand the key market trends.

The research team has discovered that whilst people feel more optimistic about the loosened restrictions (compared with the same time period last year), they are still cautious about gatherings and possible risks connected with the new delta virus.

The data collected in August showed that during the last summer month, people were more eager to gather in crowds. Searches for “concerts in,” “live music near me,” “stadium seating,” and “car shows near me” were on the rise. Besides festivals and concerts, people were visiting cafes and stores more often.  That is indicated by the increase of searches for “open now near me,” “mattress stores near,” “open 24 hours near me,” and “shop near me open now”.

Despite the times of uncertainty, people are still trying to get back to their normal, pre-covid lives.  Searches for school supplies, uniforms, and dress pants have increased compared to the previous year.  The trend in well-being and health is still high as users are searching for “Zumba classes near me,” “to self-isolate,” “mental health awareness month,” and “healthy snacks for weight loss” a lot.

Here are recent Google data that showcase people’s interests based on their Google search. The results of the research are shown in comparison with the previous year using the year-over-year (YOY) method.

Users show a rising interest in live events

  • Searches for concerts in have grown globally by over 500% YOY.
  • Live music near me searches have grown globally by over 400% YOY.
  • Searches for stadium seating have grown globally by over 600% YOY.
  • Car shows near me searches have grown globally by over 300% YOY.

We return to school and office lives

  • School supply list searches have grown globally by over 100% YOY.
  • Backpacks for school searches have grown globally by over 100% YOY.
  • Uniform store near me searches have grown globally by over 100% YOY.
  • Dress pants searches have grown globally by over 90% YOY.

People are actively taking care of their physical and mental health

  • Zumba classes near me searches have grown globally by over 400% YOY.

As Google research shows, people are trying to get back to their normal lives: going to school/office, socialize and entertain. At the same time, they don’t forget about the pandemic situation and are focused on their mental and physical health.
